Mood:

Today I finally got around to install Linux again. This time the distro is Ubunto Gutsy (7.10).
As always Ubuntu comes as a Live-CD. Just pop it in and boot. It does not get any simpler. From there, just clicking the big INSTALL button should do the trick. Next, follow the wizard and everything should be OK. I personally have a weird disc array, so I had to do the partitioning manually, which is a pain, but normal users should not have any major problems with the automatic partitioning.
After a very long wait, the install was over. Reboot. Ahh, the beautiful Ubuntu login screen. Success!
Or so I thought. The first problem was a big one. Before I had had problems with the monitor on other distros, but this particular problem was even worse. It did not take me a long time to realize I had NO INTERNET!!!
To make a long story short, after trying 5 or so different methods several times, I stumbled upon the answer. The problem was my dual-boot windows. The thing is that windows has automatically turned on this setting that powers off the ethernet card when windows shuts down.
It can be changed easily though. Just right-click on MyPC and go to properties. This is the system properties dialog. From there, go to the hardware tab and click on the device manager. There you should find the ethernet card among the listed hardware. Right-click it and go for properties again. A dialog with several tabs comes up. Go to the tabs after "driver" and you should see a "Wake-on-lan" options that says it is disabled. Enable it. Also disable the power saving options in that listing.
And that was the end of it!
PS: Right now, I am writing from a beatiful Linux environment.
