Some people have reported to have problems with the keyboard input after upgrading to ubuntu 7.10. This bug is usually caused by some bad configuration with the input methods, commonly SCIM. To fix it all you have to do is open the next file as root in your favourite text editor, in this case gedit.

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim

Inside the file replace the next entries with SCIM instead of xim

GTK_IM_MODULE="SCIM"
QT_IM_MODULE="SCIM"

Restart and it should be fixed.
